A Look at the Acer beTouch E101

The Acer beTouch E101 is the new addition to the Acer smartphone line up. It is one of the cheapest Windows Mobile 6.5 phones that is on the market. Looks have not been compromised at the low price. The beTouch doesn’t feel as solid as the iPhone, but overall is very well built.

The E101 weighs just 118 grams and measures in at 113 mm x 56 mm x 128 mm. The handset is sleek and stylish and does not sport unnecessary buttons. They are limited to a volume rocker, a lock switch, camera and a power button. The main control on the front of the phone is a touch scroll wheel instead of the usual four-way pad. This is very similar to the wheel which can be found on the classic iPod. When running your thumb around on the wheel it scrolls up and down. The wheel is very useful when the user is trying to navigate through the menus one handed. It also works as a standard direction pad.

Running on a Qualcomm MSM 7225 processor at 528 MHz which compares to phones such as Android and Windows phones from HTC. For example the HTC Magic.

The Acer beTouch C101 is very quick to respond. There is 512MB ROM and 256MB RAM which provides up to 5 hours talk time and 400 hours standby time. With a hidden microSD card slot allowing for storage expansion. Unfortunately due to the price this handset lacks Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity which is very disappointing. The user, therefore, has to rely on slower GPRS or EDGE network connection when browsing the web. Another downside is the resistive touch screen which means a certain amount of pressure needs to be applied for the handset to respond. The touch screen also has low resolution of 400 x 240 pixels.

Acer has however included Social Networking applications, such as Facebook Twitter and MySpace. YouTube and Flickr are included however continuous buffering when playing a video can be frustrating. There is a 2 Megapixel camera which captures a maximum of 1,200 x 1,600 pixels which is OK for an everyday snapper in daylight but in dull lighting conditions the lack of a flash makes for a poor image. Features also include built in GPS. Call quality is rather good and actually is better than the higher priced neoTouch S200.

Overall The Acer beTouch E101 is an attractive and stylish looking smartphone which includes many features which will appeal to various consumers due to the low price.
